MOSCOW — The brother of a prominent Russian opposition activist has been transferred from jail to prison.

Alexei Navalny's brother, Oleg, was convicted in December of defrauding a French cosmetics company and handed a 3 ½ year-sentence. Oleg Navalny's lawyer Kirill Polozov said Wednesday he was transferred from a Moscow jail to a prison elsewhere in Russia to serve his sentence.

Alexei Navalny, the key driving force behind the 2011-2012 mass protests in Moscow, received a suspended sentence in the same case. Both brothers rejected the charges as being part of a political vendetta by President Vladimir Putin.

Alexei Navalny is currently serving a 15-day sentence for distributing leaflets on the subway. A court rejected his plea for early release to attend the funeral Tuesday of slain Putin critic Boris Nemtsov.
