Man whose baby was buried in backyard sentenced to 10 years in prison

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida — A South Florida man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the disappearance and death of his infant son.

A Broward County judge sentenced 30-year-old Calvin Melvin on Friday. As part of a deal with prosecutors, Melvin pleaded no contest last month to three counts of giving false information to law enforcement officials. He had been facing child neglect charges.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://goo.gl/u1x261) reports that the skeletal remains of 5-month-old Dontrell Melvin were discovered buried behind the family's former Hallandale Beach home in January 2013, several days after a welfare check. The child had last been seen in July 2011.

Calvin Melvin and the boy's mother, Brittney Sierra, blamed each other, but no one was ever charged with causing the child's death. Child neglect charges against Sierra were dropped in April.
