MINNEAPOLIS — Mankato West quarterback Ryan Schlichte has been picked as the Minnesota Associated Press Player of the Year for high school football.

The award was announced Tuesday with the AP's all-state teams.

Schlichte led the Scarlets to the Class 5A championship with a 42-19 victory Saturday over Simley. Mankato West beat St. Michael-Albertville 26-21 in the snow in the semifinals, when Schlichte accounted for 320 yards and four touchdowns. For the season, Schlichte finished with 45 scoring passes and just six interceptions plus 18 rushing touchdowns. His completion percentage was better than 63 percent.

Schlichte has committed to play for his hometown school, Minnesota State. He's the second Mankato West quarterback in four years to be named the AP Player of the Year, following Philip Nelson in 2011.
