PRINCETON, West Virginia — A Bluefield man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison on charges stemming from the death of his infant son.

Media outlets report that 24-year-old Cassidy Byrd was sentenced on Monday in Mercer County Circuit Court.

Byrd was convicted of child abuse and involuntary manslaughter following a trial in March.

His 8-week-old son, Ethan Byrd, died in April 2014. A medical examiner testified during the trial that infant's skull was fractured by a blow to the head.

Byrd's attorneys say they plan to file an appeal.
