DURHAM, North Carolina — The woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of rape has appealed her separate conviction for stabbing her boyfriend to death.
WRAL in Raleigh reports (http://bit.ly/1tAGso8 ) that on Monday, a lawyer for Crystal Mangum filed an appeal of her 2013 conviction.
Attorney Ann Petersen asks that Mangum get a new trial. Petersen says the jury shouldn't have been allowed to hear evidence about an attack on another man in February 2010.
Magnum has said she stabbed her boyfriend, 46-year-old Reginald Daye, in self-defense because he was beating her in 2011.
In 2006, Mangum's false claims against the Duke players made national headlines, but the players were declared innocent after Mangum's story crumbled and her mental stability was questioned. The Durham prosecutor who championed Mangum's case was disbarred.
