LA VERNIA, Texas — A South Texas school bus driver has been cited for going too fast when the vehicle missed a curve, hit a fence and left a passenger hurt.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Wednesday that 65-year-old Lyman Lyro was cited for unsafe speed in the wreck near La Vernia (luh VER'-nee-uh).

Lyro was removed from his driving duties with the La Vernia Independent School District following Tuesday morning's accident.

Trooper Jack Johnson says Lyro said there was a distraction with some children, he looked up and wasn't able to manage the curve.

The bus carried Lyro and four students. One child was treated for a minor injury.

No publicly listed telephone number could immediately be located for Lyro.

La Vernia is 20 miles east of San Antonio.
