ATLANTA — Officials say a Civil War battlefield in Cobb County has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The site called the Johnston's River Line and Union Field Fortifications at Henderson Road was the scene of heavy fighting in July 1864. It was added in May to the National Register, which is the country's formal recognition for historic sites and objects.

Officials say the area is within a larger "core battlefield" where Confederate trenches, a rare type of infantry and other signs of duels have been found.
