Police say Long Island bicyclist fatally struck by car after swerving into oncoming traffic

LAKE RONKONKOMA, New York — Police say a bicycle rider was killed when he swerved into oncoming traffic and was hit by a car on Long Island.

The accident happened shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday in Lake Ronkonkoma.

Suffolk County police say 51-year-old Luis Benitez was riding a bicycle westbound when he swerved into the eastbound lane and was hit by a car.

Benitez, of Bohemia, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not injured.

The investigation is continuing.
