Colbert County authorities say skeletal remains found in northern Alabama

CHEROKEE, Alabama — Colbert County authorities are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains in northern Alabama.

Multiple media outlets report that hunters found the human remains Friday night near railroad tracks in the Riverton-Rose Trail area. The decomposed remains will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville for further analysis.

Colbert County Sheriff Frank Williamson says he would not speculate who the remains could be.

Coroner Carlton Utley says the body appeared to be male based on the bone structure. Utley says the remains will be sent to the forensic lab Monday.
