Gov. Rauner to attend Chicago ceremony as residents mark Veterans Day in Illinois


CHICAGO — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel plan to attend this year's Veterans Day ceremony at Soldier Field.

They're among Illinoisans marking the holiday on Wednesday.

Honor Flight of the Quad Cities said starting Wednesday it will accept applications from veterans who served during the Vietnam War era to begin going on free trips to Washington to visit war memorials.

The Housing Authority of Joliet says it will receive nearly $149,000 in federal vouchers to provide housing to homeless veterans.

And in Camp Point in western Illinois students at Central Junior High School spent Tuesday on their eighth annual "Take a Veteran to School Day." Navy veteran Fred Bessell of Camp Point was one of more than 50 veterans who attended. He said it's "neat to know the kids appreciate you."
