NEW ORLEANS — University of New Orleans baseball coach Ron Maestri, who has led the program to 543 victories and a College World Series berth in 1984, has retired after a two-year return to the program.
The 74-year-old Maestri, for whom UNO's home field is named, elevated the Privateers to national prominence in his first stint with the program between 1972 and 1985.
The coach hoped his return in 2014 would bolster a program hampered by recent university-wide financial uncertainty.
Playing in the Southland Conference, UNO went 25-78 under Maestri the past two seasons, leaving his career record with the Privateers at 543-315-1.
Athletics director Derek Morel says UNO is grateful for Maestri's service and loyalty and that an announcement about hiring process for Maestri's successor will come later this week.
