DONALDSONVILLE, Louisiana — Ascension Parish School Board members will soon begin planning the search for a new superintendent after Patrice Pujol announced that she is leaving March 1.

Pujol told media outlets Wednesday that after 39 years with the school district, she will become the president of the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, based in Santa Monica, California.

Pujol says she will be working out of a newly created Baton Rouge office for the organization, which helps schools attract and develop top teachers and leaders.

School board Vice President Taft Kleinpeter says an executive committee will meet Monday to talk about naming an interim superintendent.

Pujol became the parish's first female superintendent in 2010. She was the 2015 Louisiana State Superintendent of the Year and was one of four finalists for the national honor.
