PHOENIX — Authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot by Phoenix police after he allegedly pointed a gun twice at officers.

Police on Friday identified the dead man as 68-year-old Robert Hammonds.

They say Hammonds was spotted driving a car with stolen license plates about 11:30 a.m. Thursday in northwest Phoenix.

Police say Hammonds initially pointed his weapon at two veteran officers after he exited his vehicle at an apartment complex.

They say he then fled inside an area of the apartments where he pointed his weapon at officers for a second time.

Police say one officer then shot Hammond, who died at the scene.

The two 42-year-old officers involved have 18 and 20 years of police service.

Police say their investigation into the fatal shooting is continuing.
