SAN DIEGO — Chase Utley was activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday and started at second base and batted leadoff against the San Diego Padres.

He had been out since June 23 with right ankle inflammation.

The Phillies selected the contract of lefty Adam Loewen from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The Phillies had made roster room on Thursday night when they optioned right-hander Dalier Hinojosa and outfielder Jordan Danks to Lehigh Valley.
