HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — Lamar County officials plan a Labor Day ribbon-cutting for the first county-owned park. But Supervisor Phillip Carlisle says Backstrom Park could open earlier than that.

Michael Essary is vice president of Neel-Shaffer Inc., which designed the park. He tells The Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/1fWO1zl ) that Floore Industrial Contractors Inc. of Moss Point expects to be finished by Aug. 7, unless there's rain.

The 3-acre park has been planned since 2013.

A playground opened in late 2014, but has been closed since construction and landscaping began for the rest of the park in March.

Carlisle said a bathroom has been added, saving a long walk to the restrooms in adjacent Oak Grove Optimist Park, which has baseball and softball fields and batting cages.
