LOS ANGELES — A man shot by police after he pointed a gun at officers near a Los Angeles middle school has died at a hospital.

Officer Liliana Preciado says police responded to several reports of an armed man around 7 a.m. Thursday in a residential area of Sylmar.

Preciado says when officers arrived the man pointed the gun at his own head and ignored orders to drop the weapon. She says when the man pointed the gun at police, an officer opened fire, striking him.

The man, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police recovered a gun at the scene.

The incident occurred about a block from Olive Vista Middle School.

No officers were injured.
