LAS VEGAS — Prison officials say a 60-year-old inmate serving an attempted battery sentence died earlier this month at a Las Vegas hospital.

The Nevada Department of Corrections reported Thursday that Jay McDonald died Feb. 2 at University Medical Center.

Clark County coroner's officials responded and are conducting an autopsy to determine McDonald's cause of death.

McDonald had been convicted in Clark County of attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm and was serving a sentence of 12 to 30 months.

He'd been in the prison system since August.

Prison officials say they notified his next of kin after an exhaustive search.
