CONCORD, New Hampshire — 'Tis the season to celebrate all things maple.
Sugar makers statewide have opened their doors to the public this weekend to celebrate the centuries-old craft of maple sugaring. It's the 20th annual Maple Weekend in New Hampshire.
Many maple farmers are offering free samples of fresh syrup, maple candies and confections, coffee and doughnuts. Some visitors can take part in the sap-gathering and boiling process.
Some places have pancake breakfasts, petting farms and horse-drawn rides.
The season, like last year's season, got off to a slow start, with cold temperatures not allowing for a lot of sap to flow. Some warmer weather this week has helped maple producers.
The best daytime temperatures are in the mid-40s. The ideal nighttime temperature is about 28 degrees.
The maple industry in New Hampshire generally produces close to 90,000 gallons of maple syrup a year. The state record was 125,000 in 2011. Maple sugaring time runs from mid-February to mid-April.
