Man hospitalized after blaze damaged apartment in Grand Island, fire chief says

GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska — A man has been hospitalized after a fire that damaged an apartment in Grand Island.

The fire was reported around 11 p.m. Sunday at the Holiday Garden Townhouses. Grand Island Fire Chief Cory Schmidt says firefighters found the man near the doorway to the apartment, and he was taken to a hospital. The carcass of a dog was found inside the apartment.

Schmidt says the fire was contained to the apartment kitchen, but smoke reached other apartments as well, temporarily displacing the tenants.

The fire cause is being investigated.
