SALT LAKE CITY — Republican Gov. Gary Herbert will hold his monthly televised news conference on Thursday as he weighs whether he'll sign a bill that would have Utah use a firing squad if lethal injection drugs cannot be obtained.
It's unclear if Herbert will discuss the proposal during the morning news conference taped at KUED-TV.
Herbert has declined to say if he will sign the firing squad bill but says it could offer Utah a backup if the state cannot get execution drugs.
Utah lawmakers passed the bill last week as states struggle to obtain lethal injection drugs amid a nationwide shortage.
Death penalty opponents are urging the governor to veto the bill. They argue firing squads are barbaric and archaic.
