PUEBLO, Colorado — Authorities have released the name of a man who was shot and killed by law enforcement officers in Pueblo.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports ( ) 26-year-old Jon Jaquez was shot multiple times in the torso area Tuesday night and died at the scene.

Officers who were investigating an assault that happened earlier in the day spotted a person of interest in that case at about 6:30 p.m. Investigators say they encountered Jaquez and shot him.

It's unclear if Jaquez, who police say was armed, was a suspect or a person of interest in the assault case.

Investigators have not said what prompted the shooting, and it was unclear Wednesday whether Pueblo police officers or Pueblo County sheriff's deputies fired the fatal shots.
