Norman High School teacher Shawn Sheehan named 2016 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year

OKLAHOMA CITY — Norman High School teacher Shawn Sheehan has been named Oklahoma Teacher of the Year for 2016.

Sheehan teaches special education and Algebra I at Norman High School, where he has taught since his first day as a teacher four years ago.

Sheehan holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Arizona State University and a master's degree in special education from the University of Oklahoma.

Sheehan was named Teacher of the Year Tuesday by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister. He was selected by a panel of 21 state judges and was one of 12 finalists for the title.

Sheehan will spend the next year as Oklahoma's teacher ambassador, traveling across the state to meet with educators. Sheehan will also represent Oklahoma in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
