Bronze statues of former South Dakota governors to be unveiled in November

PIERRE, South Dakota — The bronze statues of former Governors George S. Mickelson, Peter Norbeck and Robert Vessey are slated to be unveiled Nov. 1 at the state Capitol.

KCCR radio reports the ceremony is part of the official celebration of South Dakota's 125th anniversary of statehood.

The Capitol Complex Restoration and Beautification Commission approved the placement of the Mickelson statue within the Capitol Complex.

The Vessey statue will be located in front of the South Dakota Retailers Association. Vessey was one of the founders of the group.

Norbeck's statue is scheduled to be placed in the northeast corner of Pierre Street and Dakota Avenue..

The statues will be placed at their permanent location sometime next year.
