SALT LAKE CITY — House Speaker Greg Hughes says he's stepping down from a state commission studying the relocation of the state prison for scheduling reasons.
Hughes says in a statement Thursday that he's facing increasing demands on his time as the new leader of Utah's House of Representatives.
He's appointed Mapleton Republican Rep. Francis Gibson to replace him on the commission.
Hughes is a Republican from Draper, the Salt Lake City suburb where the 700-acre prison currently sits.
Legislators decided last year that prison should be relocated because it is aging and occupies valuable real estate.
The Prison Relocation Commission is expected to recommend a new site to Utah lawmakers this year.
