CAMDEN, New Jersey — The FBI and other law enforcement authorities are conducting excavation work near some homes in southern New Jersey.

But they won't say why they are digging at the site on Erie Street in Camden.

The work began early Tuesday and continued throughout the day. The area was blocked off, and a large tarp covered the area where the digging was being done.

Residents said the work was concentrated behind the homes. They said the searchers were using heavy equipment, including a backhoe, dump truck and jack hammers.
