WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is nominating a former Clinton White House deputy chief of staff as ambassador to Mexico and a former senior State Department official and prominent Indian-American as ambassador to India.

Obama has selected Maria Echaveste for the Mexico post and Richard Rahul Verma for the India assignment. The posts require Senate confirmation.

Echaveste was White House deputy chief of staff from 1998 to 2001. Before that she was the administrator of the Wage and Hour Division of the Labor Department. She is a senior adviser to NVG, a government relations firm she founded.

Verma was assistant secretary for legislative affairs at the State Department from 2009 to 2011. He has also worked as a senior national security and foreign policy adviser to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
