Commander of USS Shamal removed from position due to investigation

NORFOLK, Virginia — The Navy says the commanding officer of the USS Shamal has been relieved of her duties while allegations into inappropriate behavior are investigated.

Lt. Cmdr. Alisha E. Hamilton was relieved of her duties by the commander of Naval Surface Squadron 14.

The Shamal is a patrol coastal ship that is based in Mayport, Florida

Norfolk-based Naval Surface Force Atlantic said in a statement that Lt. Cmdr. David Catterall has temporarily assumed command of the Shamal. Catterall has been serving as the commanding officer of USS Tornado.

Patrol coastal ships operate near shore to protect ports and waterways, among other things.
