Branstad schedules special election to fill NW Iowa House seat vacated by a resignation

DES MOINES, Iowa — Gov. Terry Branstad has scheduled a special election to fill the House District 5 seat left open by the resignation of Chuck Soderberg.

Branstad announced Tuesday that the election would be held Nov. 3 for the district that includes Plymouth County and part of Woodbury County.

Soderberg, a Republican from Le Mars, announced last month that he will resign from the Iowa House to become the executive vice president and general manager of the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives. His last day as a legislator was Monday.

Soderberg was elected to the House in 2004. He became chairman of the chamber's Appropriations Committee in 2013.
