CHICAGO — A Cook County judge has ruled that a suburban Chicago woman is mentally unfit to stand trial for the death of her 6-month-old granddaughter.

The SouthtownStar reports (http://bit.ly/1oYYyIW ) that Judge Clayton Crane made the ruling Monday in the case of 62-year-old Alfreda Giedrojc (gad-ROYDZ') of Oak Lawn. Giedrojc is charged with first-degree murder after authorities say she used a sledgehammer to kill Vivian Summers in October 2013. Prosecutors say the woman also used a kitchen knife to slit the baby's throat.

The judge will announce her treatment schedule at a hearing Aug. 28. He ruled that she must be re-evaluated after one year. She will remain in the Cook County jail.

The newspaper reports assistant public defender Michael Wilson wasn't available for comment after the ruling.
