Hatfield man pleads guilty to crash that killed friend; is forgiven by victim's parents

NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts — A western Massachusetts man who crashed his car, killing one of his best friends, has been sentenced to 2 ½ years in jail after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide while drunk and manslaughter.

Robert Crowther, of Hatfield, was also sentenced to five years of probation on Tuesday.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette (http://bit.ly/1J3v0qh ) reports that the 27-year-old Crowther's attorney said his client would have received a more severe sentence if not for the grace of the victim's parents, who expressed forgiveness in court.

Authorities say Crowther had been drinking and smoking marijuana and was driving more than twice the speed limit when he crashed in Williamsburg last September, killing his passenger, 25-year-old Tomas Clark, of Northampton.

The prosecutor said he was "astounded" by the compassion of the Clark's parents.
