NEWPORT, Vermont — A 50-year-old Vermont man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for shooting and killing a Westfield man who had taken him in and gave him work.

Peter Lavalette tearfully apologized to the family of the victim George Kouzoujian during his sentencing Wednesday.

Police say Kouzoujian, a movie stage builder, was killed June 28, 2013, at his Westfield home where he lived part time. Vermont police didn't learn of the killing until after Lavalette was arrested July 1 in Indiana during a traffic stop where he told police of the killing.

The Caledonian Record reported (http://bit.ly/1zmUnwi) that Lavalette pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September. At the time, he said he had no justification for killing Kouzoujian.
