JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina — A former North Topsail Beach deputy fire chief will serve three years of probation and must repay $10,000 after pleading guilty to embezzlement.

Area media outlets report that George Frederick Moore III of Sneads Ferry pleaded guilty to four counts of embezzlement in Jacksonville on Wednesday.

Moore was the department's deputy chief from 2003 until October of 2012. Prosecutors say during that time he embezzled $60,000 from the Firefighters Relief Fund.

Moore admitted to taking the money and said he did so because of financial problems after his wife lost her job.

Insurance covers the loss beyond the $10,000 deductible Moore must pay.
