Northern California man, 73, agrees to plea deal in what he says was mercy killing of wife

OAKLAND, California — A 73-year-old Northern California man who shot his ailing wife in what he says was a mercy killing will be sentenced to three years as part of a plea deal.

Jerry Canfield pleaded no contest last week to voluntary manslaughter in the death of his wife, Joann, who was suffering from dementia. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office says Canfield is expected to get credit for time served when he's sentenced Jan. 14.

Police say Canfield confessed that he killed his 72-year-old wife by shooting her in the head. He allegedly told investigators the two had previously agreed he would end her life if an illness left her in constant pain.

Officials said Canfield left a dozen roses at his wife's side.
