JULIAN, California — The pilot killed when his rented plane crashed in a remote area of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park has been identified as a 69-year-old Orange County resident.

Max John Mizejewski of Rancho Santa Margarita was found dead Saturday near the wrecked Cessna.

The small plane disappeared soon after taking off Friday in the Coachella Valley. The aircraft was found upside down in a desolate area known as "Borrego Badlands."

His wife tells the Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/1odf2wj ) that Mizejewski was a Huntington Beach High School graduate and a retired Army helicopter pilot who fought in Vietnam.

Federal air safety and transportation officials are investigating the crash.
