ELKHART, Indiana — A northern Indiana woman whose son was fatally shot by three officers who said he tried to hit them with a truck is suing the city of Elkhart and the officers.

Janice Ostrom filed her wrongful death suit Nov. 19 in Elkhart Circuit Court about a year after 31-year-old Christopher Ryckeart was fatally shot following a 40-minute police chase of a stolen truck driven by the Elkhart man.

The Elkhart Truth reports (http://bit.ly/1HG73DO ) the officers said they shot Ryckeart when he began backing the truck toward them.

Ostrom's suit contends her son was unarmed and "posed no serious threat of physical harm" to the officers. Her suit seeking unspecified damages also says the officers violated Ryckeart's Fourth Amendment rights.

A grand jury cleared the officers of any wrongdoing in January.
