Outer Banks cheerleading coach arrested on charges of sex with minors


KILL DEVIL HILLS, North Carolina — A cheerleading coach on the Outer Banks has been arrested and charged with sex crimes.

Multiple media outlets reported that 39-year-old Russell Scherer of Kill Devil Hills has been charged with five counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and one count of statutory sex offense by an adult.

Police say the charges involved three victims.

Investigators said Scherer has operated or worked at several cheerleading businesses or sports clubs in Fletcher, Jarvisburg, Kill Devil Hills, Manteo and Nags Head.

Scherer is being held in the Dare County jail in Manteo. It was not clear if he has an attorney.
