ASBURY, Iowa — State officials on Tuesday said about 200 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged recently into a tributary in eastern Iowa.

The state Department of Natural Resources said the discharge near the city of Asbury occurred Monday after a pipe ruptured.

The wastewater discharged into a tributary of North Fork Catfish Creek. City officials said they quickly diverted most of the wastewater into another pumping station while repairs were made.

The area has been disinfected, according to city officials. Residents have been encouraged to stay out of the creek for up to 48 hours.

Asbury is located northwest of Dubuque.
