TACOMA, Washington — Junior Brandon Wellington rushed for three touchdowns and junior quarterback Harley Kirsch added two touchdown passes as Eastside Catholic beat Bellevue 35-13 to snap the Wolverines' 67-game winning streak in the Class 3A high school championship football game on Friday night at the Tacoma Dome.
With its first state title, Eastside Catholic, which led 14-13 at halftime, also ended Bellevue's six-year championship streak. The Wolverines beat Eastside Catholic (13-1) in the previous two championship games.
Bellevue (13-1) suffered its first loss since a 28-21 defeat against Skyline in 2010. The Wolverines had won 26 straight playoff games and 11 of the last 13 state titles.
Kirsch completed 20 of 22 passes for 188 yards to lead the Sammamish school from east of Seattle. He rushed for 94 yards on 20 carries. Wellington had 33 rushes for 110 yards.
Eastside Catholic out-gained Bellevue 414-158 yards and had 24 first downs to four for the Wolverines. The Crusaders held Bellevue to 10 yards and no first downs in the second half.
