LAS VEGAS — James Daniel scored 30 points as Howard fought off Texas Southern for an 87-81 victory in the Men Who Speak Up Event on Monday night.
Daniel, who has scored 30 or more points three times this season, made 16 of 19 free throw attempts and had three steals. Damon Collins was 6 of 10 from the floor for a career-high 17 points and Marcel Boyd and Tyler Stone added 10 apiece for Howard (2-2).
Howard, which had a 55-45 lead with 17:06 left in the second, never trailed until Texas Southern's David Blanks made two free throws for a 78-77 lead with 1:52 left in the game. Kofi Andoh made a 3-point play to retake the lead with 1:34 remaining. Boyd drove for a layup and Daniel made five free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Malcolm Riley led Texas Southern (0-4) with 26 points and 10 rebounds.
