Fire nearing containment in sage grouse habitat in Ruby Lake wildlife refuge in eastern Nevada

ELY, Nevada — Federal land managers say crews are nearing containment of a lightning-sparked wildfire that charred about a square mile of sage grouse habitat in a wildlife refuge in eastern Nevada.

The Bureau of Land Management on Friday reported no injuries or damage to private property of the 657-acre fire about 8 miles southeast of the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge and 60 miles northwest of Ely.

Bureau spokesman Chris Hanefeld says crews have the fire 75 percent contained, and expect full containment during the weekend.

The fire was reported Tuesday.

It charred pinion pine, juniper, sagebrush and grasses before firefighters from Ely, White Pine County, the Nevada Division of Forestry and federal Bureau of Indian Affairs and Forest Service carved firebreaks.

Crews were aided by heavy equipment and a helicopter.
