ASTORIA, Oregon — A Coast Guard helicopter crew has picked up three injured crew members from a cargo ship 50 miles off the north Oregon coast and brought them to Astoria, Oregon, for medical treatment.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Amanda Norcross says the injuries included apparent chemical burns and one man had a possible broken bone. The men reportedly were injured while refueling and cleaning the ship's holds.

After the 623-foot commercial vessel Almasi requested help, the helicopter crew flew out to the ship Thursday afternoon, assessed the injuries, hoisted the men aboard and flew them back to Astoria, where they were taken to a local hospital.

Weather in the area included 19-foot seas and winds gusting to 38 mph.
