HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — A north Alabama woman accused in her 7-month-old daughter's drowning death is expected to undergo a mental evaluation.

Al.com reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/1CKGg32 ) that the May 18 trial for 29-year-old Desiree Childers has been delayed because a judge has ordered her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Authorities have said Childers put her fully clothed 7-month-old daughter in the bathtub and left her there to drown in August 2013. Investigators have said Childers was the only person at home when the girl drowned, and that the girl was too small to have climbed into the tub on her own.

Childers has been held without bond in the Madison County jail after failing a drug test in December. Childers's attorneys have said she showed signs of mental illness before her arrest.
