RICHMOND, Virginia — Dominion Resources' charitable foundation is offering up to $1.2 million in grants aimed at supporting environmental stewardship initiatives.

The Richmond-based energy provider says the funding is part of a program designed to support specific, short-term environmental improvement projects. The program is an expansion of one piloted in Virginia in 2013.

Grants for up to $50,000 each are available for nonprofit organizations in and near the communities served by Dominion. The application deadline is March 2.

Officials say the funding should focus on protecting and preserving natural habitats, monitoring and enhancing water quality, preventing pollution and improving open spaces, making nature accessible and educating the public about environmental stewardship.

Dominion Resources Inc. is one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy and serves retail customers in 11 states.
