4-year-old boy drowns while visiting Cape Cod beach despite efforts by bystanders and EMTs

DENNIS, Massachusetts — A 4-year-old boy visiting a Cape Cod beach has drowned at Corporation Beach in Dennis despite efforts by bystanders and emergency responders.

Police said they began receiving calls at around 5:30 p.m. Friday about a possible drowning.

Police Lt. Peter Benson tells the Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/1F6IigG) bystanders certified in CPR had started trying to resuscitate the boy while emergency responders, including a nearby animal control officer, were on the way.

Jack Tuohy-Bedford of West Yarmouth said he saw a woman run into the water near where several children were wading and pull up the boy, and saw two men begin CPR.

Dennis Fire Chief Mark Dellner said police and firefighters are "devastated" they couldn't revive the boy. He said, "our prayers are with the family," who he said spoke only Mandarin Chinese.
