Unemployment rate steady in Pennsylvania in June at 5.4%, as payrolls creep down

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania — Pennsylvania's unemployment rate remained steady in June, as payrolls shrank slightly.

The state Department of Labor and Industry said Friday that the jobless rate remained at 5.4 percent in June, the same as it was in May. That is above the national rate of 5.3 percent.

The civilian labor force, the number of people working or looking for work, rose by 7,000 to remain above 6.4 million. Employment rose by 9,000 to creep closer to 6.1 million while unemployment shrank by 3,000 to about 345,000.

A June survey of employers found that seasonally adjusted non-farm payrolls remained around 5.85 million after dropping by about 3,000 jobs. The biggest increases from May were in government and professional and business services. The leisure and hospitality sector lost the most jobs.
