LINCOLN, Nebraska — The Lincoln firefighters union will seek arbitration in its squabble with the fire chief over the use of a specially equipped pickup to handle some medical calls.

The union filed a grievance after Lincoln Fire and Rescue Chief John Huff's May 12 order. The chief wants crews at Station 1 to take the pickup instead of a fire engine to medical calls. Huff said they must take it or report why they didn't.

The union says the order violates the contract on, among other things, work conditions and staffing levels. The chief last week denied the grievance.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/1jUkJN9 ) that over the next few months, the city and union will decide on an arbitrator, who will hold a hearing and rule on the grievance.
