MONTPELIER, Vermont — It's Bennington Battle Day in Vermont.
The celebration marks the anniversary of the Battle of Bennington that was fought in 1777 just over the border in New York when soldiers fighting for the British marched toward Bennington in an attempt to seize weapons stored there.
On Saturday, admission to the eight historic sites owned by the state of Vermont will be free.
A celebration at the Bennington Battle Monument in Bennington will include a living history encampment, Revolutionary War cannons and other activities.
There will also be special events at Mount Independence in Orwell and the Hubbardton Battlefield — the only Vermont location where a Revolutionary War battle was fought.
