NAPLES, Florida — An elderly southwest Florida landlord has been convicted of killing a tenant during a confrontation over unpaid rent.

Collier County jurors rejected 79-year-old Javier Ortoll's self-defense claims and found him guilty Friday of second-degree murder. He faces a possible life sentence.

Authorities say Ortoll got into an argument with 51-year-old Edward Melone in October 2013 because the tenant had not paid his rent. Ortell testified that he had been sitting in his van, and Melone reached inside and punched him.

Witness gave varying accounts, and prosecutors say Ortoll didn't act in fear but in anger over the unpaid rent.

According to the Naples Daily News (http://goo.gl/s7x1oQ ), toxicology reports showed cocaine and narcotic prescriptions in Melone's system, but it wasn't clear if the levels were enough to cause aggressive behavior.
