NEWARK, New Jersey — Authorities say a Newark police officer shot a suspect who was struggling with other officers.
The suspect is in critical condition and a weapon was recovered.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says police, working to eliminate firearms from the street, tried to interview the suspect on Thursday night. The prosecutor's office says the suspect first fled in a cab and then on foot.
A veteran officer shot the suspect in the area of South 6th Street. The officer was taken to a hospital for observation and released.
The name of the suspect has not been released.
