SUFFOLK, Virginia — Virginia State Police say an airplane was on a training flight when it made a crash landing in a swamp.

Police on Wednesday identified the flight instructor as 57-year-old Martin S. Arthur of Virginia Beach and the student pilot as 32-year-old Russell F. Kinder of Norfolk.

Police say Kinder was piloting the single-engine Cessna when it began experiencing engine trouble on Tuesday. The plane made a crash landing in a swamp in Suffolk, about a mile southwest of the Hampton Roads Executive Airport in Chesapeake. Police say Arthur and Kinder walked from the crash site to the airport.

Arthur suffered a minor hand injury.

Federal Aviation Administration personnel were at the scene on Wednesday. Police say the National Transportation Safety Board also has been notified.
